Bunpimay Festival in Buon Don – The Vibrant Colors of the Land of a Million Elephants in the Heart of the Central Highlands

The Harmony of Cultures in Buon Don
Dak Lak in general, and Buon Don in particular, is a land rich in cultural identity, where many ethnic groups have coexisted for centuries, weaving together a vibrant and diverse cultural tapestry. Among them, the Lao people are one of the earliest communities to have settled in this land, bringing with them the customs, traditions, and spiritual beliefs of the “Land of a Million Elephants,” harmoniously blending with the lives of the Êđê, M’nông, and Kinh people.
From this cultural convergence, Bunpimay – the traditional New Year festival of the Lao people according to the Buddhist calendar – has become a distinctive cultural celebration, preserved and held annually in Buon Don, especially within the Buon Don Suspension Bridge Tourism Center – Island Village.

The Meaning of Bunpimay Festival
Bunpimay (also known as the Water Splashing Festival) marks the Lao New Year according to the Buddhist calendar, celebrated in mid-April each year. It is a time for people to pray for peace, happiness, and prosperity, washing away the misfortunes of the old year to welcome good fortune and blessings in the new one.
The main rituals of Bunpimay are conducted with reverence and deeply reflect Buddhist values, including:

  • Buddha bathing ceremony: cleansing misfortune and praying for blessings.
  • Sand stupa building: creating merit and wishing for peace in the new year.
  • Wrist-tying ceremony: wishing one another health, luck, and unity.
  • Floating lantern ceremony: praying for peace for families and communities.
  • Water-splashing festival: symbolizing joy, freshness, and renewal.

Alongside these are traditional Lao dances such as Lam Vong and Lam Toei, as well as signature Lao dishes like sticky rice, grilled bananas, and papaya salad.
